BUILDING A COMMUNITY THAT CARES

Eva Martin, an entrepreneur who owns and operates three Las Vegas McDonald’s restaurants along with her daughter Robbie, knows first-hand how your life can change in an instant.RMHC

After working 17 years with her husband, James, as owner of a dry cleaning business, and 7 years as owner/operator of a McDonald’s restaurant in the Chicago area, the couple relocated to Las Vegas to pursue the opportunity of growing the business. When James passed away after a brief illness, Eva had to obtain franchise licensing and run the restaurants on her own. Robbie joined her mother in 2012 after twenty years as a practicing attorney, most recently as Assistant Attorney General for the New York State Office of the Attorney General, and is training to become an independent franchisee herself.

When the economic downturn hit, tragedy hit again when Eva’s bank closed its doors.  “It was a nightmare,” Eva said. “I wanted to call 911.   I didn’t know what to do.”  Not sure where to turn, she visited Bank of Nevada where she met Joyce Smith, Senior Vice President and Regional Manager.

Joyce and her Bank of Nevada team stepped in and reassured Eva that “everything would be alright.” “She was an angel. She made the process bearable and then she showed me exactly what to do to keep everything going right,” Eva said.

Through this relationship the two women found a common bond. As they worked together they learned they both had a passion for helping families in need.

“We have a relationship that is multi-pronged,” said Eva.  “Joyce started off as my banker, quickly became a friend, and now we are working together to help families during times of need.”

Recognizing Joyce’s talents and compassion, Eva asked Joyce to join the board at Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Greater Las Vegas, which provides a “home away from home” for more than 200 families a year who travel to Las Vegas to receive critical medical treatment for their children. Eva was the chairwoman of the RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Board of Directors.

“Just as I was getting involved with RMHC® I had a grandson who was born and was very sick for the first month,” Joyce said. “I could feel exactly what other families were going through and it motivated me even more to get involved. It just all came together at once.”

During the past 15 years, RMHC® of Greater Las Vegas has provided “a home away from home” for more than 3,500 families whose children have been treated at local hospitals. The Lunch Is On Us program started in 2004 and has since provided nearly 200,000 lunches to families of children in local hospitals.  In addition, more than $2.8 million dollars in scholarships have been awarded to high school graduates from Nye and Clark counties and more than 5,000 children in rural Nevada have received free dental care through Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, a partnership with Nevada’s Health Center’s Miles for Smiles. Ronald McDonald House Charities continues to create and support programs that directly improve the health, education and well-being of children – Ronald McDonald House® is the cornerstone.

“Through my relationship with Eva and RMHC®, I am able to provide help to families when they need help the most,” Joyce said.
